LAKE CHILWA WETLAND AND CATCHMENT MANAGEMENT PROJECT

DEVELOPMENT OBJECTIVES

The natural resources of the lake Chilwa wetland and catchment are utilised in a sustainable manner by local communities, for their benefit, through:

  1. Support to the development and implementation of a Management Plan for the Lake Chilwa wetland and catchment by the majority of stakeholders based on a Statement of Environment for the Lake Chilwa Wetland and Catchment and Gender profile as:
a) a basis for sustainable natural resource utilisation in the Lake Chilwa

Wetland and Catchment.

b) in fulfilment of the Ramsar Convention for which Malawi is a signatory

and Lake Chilwa is a listed site;

2. Increase of capacity for wetland and natural resources management among

district personnel, extension staff and selected communities in the riparian

districts of Lake Chilwa.

OUTPUTS

  1. Institutional framework for district environmental management established.
  2. Statement of the environment and gender profile for Lake Chilwa Wetland and catchment prepared.
  3. Lake Chilwa Wetland Management Plan consolidated through three District Environmental Action Plans (DEAP).
IV. Community Based Natural Resource Management implemented.

ORGANISATION, MANAGEMENT AND ADMINISTRATION

The project will be implemented under the overall responsibility of the Environmental District Officers in the three districts supported by the Assistant Project Manager and the Chief Technical Adviser. The project organisation is proposed as follows:

PHASE l: Danish Kroner (DKK) 11,520,350 (equivalent to MK 72,893,205 at

the rate of MK 6.3 = DKK 1)
