  Livestock Commodity Team

   
The team carries out research on dairy and beef cattle, goats, sheep, chickens and guinea fowl aimed at improving livestock productivity..

Areas of research

(i) investigating the management of cattle, goats, sheep, guinea fowls, and chicken
(ii) improving the domestication and production of guinea fowls, and
(iii) investigating various methods on managing livestock pests and diseases, and
(iv) evaluating livestock management practices suitable for smallholder farmers.

Achievements

Released breeds
Recommended breeds of cattle (Malawi Zebu, Fresian, Jersey), Sheep (Dorper), Goats (Boer) and chickens (Black Australops)

Improved cultural practices
(a) reducing the average calving interval to one calf per year (dairy),
(b) stall feeding base on utilization of crop rsidues, agro-industrial by-products, grasses and legumes to improve beef, dairy and small ruminant production,
(c) cross-breeding between the Malawi Zebu cow as a multipuropse animal for meat, milk and draught power,

(d) recommended Malawi Zebu cow as a multipurporse animal for meat, milk and draught power, with exotic breeds,

(e) developed a management system for tethered sheep and goats,

(f) developed a feeding system based on green maize and Crotalaria leaves as supplement for tethered sheep and goats

(g) developed and recommended Chitedze rations for broilers and layers, and

(h)recommended free range and semi-intensive management systems for local chickens and guinea fowl rearing.
