The objective of the Malawi environmental policy is to promote sustainable,
social and economic development through the sound management of the environment
in the country. A major environmental and development challenge the policy
aims to address is to narrow the gap between the degradation of natural
resources and the environment on one hand and sustainable production and
economic growth on the other.
The policy thus provides an overall structure against which relevant
sectoral environmental policies can be reviewed to ensure that there is
consistency with the principles of sustainable development.
Government has already taken urgent measures to implement some of the
provisions of the National Environmental Policy. Already policies on Forestry,
National Parks and Wildlife and Fisheries have been reviewed and revised
to reflect current approaches in sustainable use and management of natural
resources and the environment. This initiative will continue until all
relevant sectoral policies have been reviewed |
