2.1: What sustainability means
If an activity is sustainable, for all practical purposes, it can continue
forever. An activity may be defined as sustainable on the basis of what
is known at a particular time. There can be no long-term guarantee of sustainability
because many factors remain unknown and unpredictable The moral code drawn
from this is to be conservative in actions that could affect the environment,
study the effects of such actions carefully, and learn from past mistakes.
Sustainable Development can therefore be taken to mean improving the quality
of human life while living within the carrying capacity of supporting systems.
A sustainable economy is the product of Sustainable Development. It maintains
its natural resource base and it can continue to develop by adapting and
through improvements in knowledge, organization, technical efficiency,
and wisdom IUCN/UNEP/WWF (1991). |
