ABOUT NRCM

The National Research Council of Malawi (NRCM) is one of the Government’s central agency institutions operating within the purview of the Office of the President and Cabinet (OPC). As a professional arm of the OPC on matters relating to research, science and technology, the NRCM plays a crucial role in the promotion and coordination of research, science and technology in the nation. The NRCM was constituted by a Presidential decree in 1974. According to the Malawi Government Gazette of 11th June 1976, General Notice No. 398 the Council is coordinatory and advisory in function. According to the Council's Constitution of 1990, the main purpose of the NRCM is to serve as a principal advisory organ of government on all matters relating to scientific research and technological development.

Mission
To promote and coordinate the development and application of research, science and technology for the realization of sustainable socio-economic development in line with the Malawi Government’s Poverty Reduction Goal.
Vision
Malawi to become a scientifically and technologically advanced nation.
Functions
The role of the Council is to promote the development and application of science and technology ad ensure that the results therefrom are geared and utilised in areas of maximum economic and social benefits for the people. The Council’s main functions are
1. Provided national policy direction in research, science and technology;
2. Develop and implement programmes for strengthening scientific and technological capabilities through human resource development, infrastructure and institution building;
3. Foster and promote development and application of demand-driven and focussed scientific research and technologies that are adaptable and relevant to the needs of Malawians;
4. Strengthen national and international collaboration and liaison among S & T institution, scientists, the industry and other end users to optimise application of research results for development;
5. Develop and maintain a national information system to meet identified social, scientific and technological information needs; and
6. Develop policies and guidelines on indigenous knowledge and access to genetic resources.
