PRESS RELEASE

The tourism and Hotels Board through its secretariat the Department of Tourism would like to inform all operators of all designated tourism enterprises namely: Hotels, Lodges Inns, Appartments, Guesthouse, resthouses and Restaurants and the general public that a Tourism and Hotels Board meeting was held on 30th April 2008 at Cresta Crossroads Hotel, the board approved the recommendations that were made by the Inspectors Unit with respect to the national inspection exercise that were conducted on all tourism enterprises in the country to ensure compliance with Tourisms and Hotels, Cap 50:01 of the laws of Malawi

Please note that it is a requirement by laws of Malawi, Tourism and Hotels Act, Cap 50:01 that all Tourism enterprises can operate only if licensed by the Tourism and Hotels Board upon complying with the stipulated minimum standards as provided for by the Act.

Atotal of 1069 units were inspected of which 726 were accommodation units and 343 units were restaurants. Out of these 454 complied with the stipulated minimum stadards, 378 were recommended for re-inspection and 237 for closure. The Board would further like to inform operators to ensure that their units are named by the appropriate term as indicated opn their licenses and as informed by the inspectors. It was noted that most operators, especially SMEs operate without appropriate skills thereby contributing to low quality service delivery in the sector.

Below is the list of three categories of units that have been approved for 2008 Licences; Units to be re-inspected and units to be closed respectively.
