Welcome to the Malawi SDNP pages on the Malawi communications sector. This sector comprises of (1) telecommunications (2) posts and (3) broadcasting.
The legal framework for the regulation and provision of services in this sector is in the Malawi Communications Act of 1998. The Republic of Malawi Communications Sector Policy Statement outlines the Malawi Government policy for the development of the communications sector.
The main players in the Malawi communications sector include the Malawi Telecom Limited (MTL) formerly Malawi Posts and Telcommunications Corporation (MPTC), the Malawi Broadcasting Corporation (MBC) and various small private sector companies. The Malawi Communications Act provides for the restrusturing of these organisations and creation of the Malawi Communications Regulatory Authority (MACRA)
The interconnection among cell phone and fixed line providers has been giving problems in 2000-2001. MACRA has tried to mediate and rule on some issues without much effect. Here you can find out what Malawi Telecom Limited says on this.
In 2002, Malawi started developing a new ICT Policy with the assistance of the ECA. A Malawi ICT Policy Development Framework has been produced.
The draft Malawi ICT Policy was produced in June 2003.
